Piano Keyboard

Just like a piano, keyboard instruments utilize the same basic performance platform; a series of black and white keys arranged in a specific formation. This set up is used for other common keyboard instruments such as the organ, harpsichord and clavinet. However, it is also used for a variety of electronic keyboard instruments, such as the synthesizer.

The preferred method of teaching and learning music theory is often through the use of a piano keyboard. The reason for this is because all of the various steps and scales can be easily visualized when using this platform. Unlike other instruments such as horns or guitar, it is much easier to see musical connections on a keyboard.

Music composition is often done on a piano keyboard as well. Again, this could be just because of the visual aspect. However, unlike many instruments, a piano can play chords and single note melodies, which might explain why it’s such a popular composition instrument.
